Description
GZA, a 500+ employee consulting company providing geotechnical engineering, environmental consulting, and field services to private and public clients, is seeking a senior Health & Safety professional to fill the position of Corporate Health & Safety Director. This is a Principal level position with ownership participation benefits.
The primary responsibility of this position will be to optimize all the safety processes across the company. The Corporate Health & Safety Director will participate in the development of, and ensure implementation of, company safety policies and procedures. The Director will assist in engaging all employees in the process of continuous improvement of safety through company-wide participation and involvement in all aspects of safety; and will implement global best practices in safety procedures, and quality improvements across all operations.
Position roles and responsibilities include the following.
- Develops, implements, monitors and manages safety programs, policies and procedures, and guidelines to help maintain compliance with all safety regulations; keeps abreast of any changes to laws and regulations that impact the organization. Establishes standards, promotes improvements, evaluates compliance and, if necessary, suggests action to secure satisfactory results.
- Serves as a corporate contact with all federal, state and local regulatory bodies for Safety.
- Serves as customer safety liaison; meets with customer safety representatives to discuss mutual concerns; attends customer safety meetings.
- Responsible for preparing, maintaining and updating safety policy and procedure manuals.
- Coordinates with Managers to determine required annual safety training; create in-house safety programs/ incentives that are tied to safety compliance.
- Conducts safety inspections: regularly visits job sites to conduct safety inspections; regularly visits clients to keep abreast of specific requirements: communicates with employees, and provides training and assistance as needed.
- Monitors the tracking of OSHA-required data. Reviews corporate accident reports and investigates major losses: reviews accident reports and personally investigates serious losses on sites; follow up on regular basis on injuries at sites.
- Identifies and evaluates detrimental working conditions and makes adjustments to safeguard employee health.
- Performs compliance audits and risk assessments; participate in annual safety compliance audits.
- Investigates and remedies violations; limits exposure, citations and penalties.
- Responsible for application, screening, hiring and supervision of safety coordinators for jobs sites as needed. Reviews Worker’s Compensation losses and oversees control of costs, reviews quarterly and annual WC loss reports and keeps management appraised of trends; compiles periodic safety statistical reports and distributes as needed.
- Serves as Program officer for Company Drug and Alcohol Program: responsible for post-accident and reasonable cause drug/alcohol testing and related disciplinary action.
- Responsible for preparation of fitness for duty forms for construction sites.
- Oversees Maintenance of Corporate accident files: periodically reviews accident files and OSHA 300 logs for all locations to ensure accuracy; ensures annual posting of 300A logs at all locations.
- Develops relationship with occupational clinics near construction sites for coordination of quality care for injured employees.
Candidates should meet or exceed and document the following minimum requirements.
- College degree (Master’s in Occupational Health and Safety preferred) Computer literate in Microsoft programs such as Word, Excel and Outlook
- Able to travel extensively (Driver’s License required).
- Knowledge of state and federal environmental regulations related to environmental consulting, field work, and construction.
- Proven skills, abilities and experience managing multiple tasks simultaneously.
- High achiever, highly motivated, results oriented, self starter with demonstrated ability to perform in a team environment with minimum supervision.
- A keen intuitive sense that will serve to anticipate potential problems and put corrective actions in place in a timely fashion. Ability to adapt well to fast-paced environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability and desire to communicate (to create understanding) both verbally and written with a diverse group (internal personnel—job superintendents, site safety coordinators, administration; clients; and vendors). Must be an excellent listener.
- A positive, can do attitude with the desire to work collaboratively in a professional and supportive environment. A team player that understands that success comes from the whole company being successful.
- Strong follow-through skills and abilities; a detail orientation and desire for preciseness is needed.

- Experience with OSHA regulations specifically 29 CFR 1910 and 1926.
- Experience in leading safety in a multi site environment
