Organization
The Dow Chemical Company
Location
Midland, Michigan
Description
The Toxicology and Environmental Research & Consulting (TERC) function at The Dow Chemical Company in Midland, Michigan has a unique and challenging opportunity for an Informatics Post Doctoral Fellow to conduct research within our Systems Toxicology program.
TERC focuses on research that defines and addresses potential health and environmental risks from Dow products and operational processes. Its scientists build both new capabilities and professional expertise necessary to meet regulatory requirements and to address emerging issues such as children’s health, the impact of genomic sciences on toxicology and risk assessment, and the bioavailability of contaminants in soil and sediments. Most importantly, they continue to develop and execute strategies to ensure that science-based, risk management policies remain the basic paradigm for chemicals management and regulation, globally.
The Post Doctoral fellow will participate in a research program that is developing in vitro, molecular, and computational approaches for use in early stage toxicity evaluation of new chemical products in support of “greener”, more sustainable chemical development.
Key activities of the Postdoctoral Research Fellow are likely to include the following, contingent upon individual interests and skills:
- Development of computational models to predict toxicity based on a variety of information sources, such as chemical structure, in vitro data generated in human cell line, reporter gene and zebrafish embryo models, publically available high throughput data (e.g., EPA ToxCast program), and toxicogenomic data.
- Analysis of genomic signatures using approaches such as Connectivity Mapping, and application of these methods to evaluate categories of chemicals thought to share a common mechanism of action.
- Mining of government-generated high throughput data (e.g. EPA ToxCast program) to incorporate into tiered testing approaches.
- Participate in ongoing research collaborations between Dow and laboratories such as US EPA, other companies, and/or research institutes.
- Gain experience and general knowledge about chemical safety assessment as conducted in one of world’s leading industrial toxicology laboratories.
- Publish and present research at internal/external meetings and in peer-reviewed journals.
A PhD is the minimum education requirement for this position, preferably in Toxicology, Molecular Toxicology, Informatics, Computational Biology, Systems Biology or other related disciplines.
Candidates must have had informatics as a focus of their PhD research, preferably in genomics or toxicogenomics.
The following additional skills or responsibilities are preferred:
- Advanced skills in informatics and statistical analysis
- Experience in predictive model development
- Strong background in chemistry, particularly organic chemistry
- Knowledge of basic cellular and molecular mechanisms of toxicity
- Strong written and oral communication skills that allow dissemination of complex technical issues in a clear, concise manner
- Demonstrated ability to work independently
