Instructions for Submitting a Manuscript
Instructions for submitting a manuscript to Risk Analysis (also printed on the inside back cover of every issue):
- Risk Analysis uses an electronic manuscript submission and review system, which manages all submissions, reviews, and correspondence between authors, reviewers, and editors via the Internet and email. Using the system, authors may submit manuscripts in Adobe Acrobat PDF format, MS Word, rich text, or postscript, although PDF is strongly preferred. The site provides a tool to convert all documents to PDF.
- Prior to submission, prepare your manuscript such that it is double-spaced (including references) in clear, grammatical English with margins on all sides of at least 1 in (2.5 cm) on 8.5”x11” sized pages. In general, the style of the manuscripts should follow the recommendations of the American Institute of Physics in its Style Manual. The organization and format of papers submitted to Risk Analysis is flexible to reflect the multidisciplinary nature of the journal, but a consistent format should be used throughout any one contribution. All images should be converted into high-quality image files and uploaded for purposes of review. (Upon acceptance of any manuscript, original drawings or glossy prints suitable for reproduction may be requested during copyediting.) Please number pages consecutively, with page 1 containing the article title only. Risk Analysis uses a double blind review process so it is very important that the names and affiliations of all authors should NOT appear on the manuscript. Page 2 should contain an abstract of 250 words or less at the top, followed by a list of 3 to 5 key words that express the precise content of the manuscript for indexing purposes. The manuscript text should be less than 7,000 words (i.e., excluding tables and figures), unless exceptional circumstances warrant a longer page count, for which authors should contact the Managing Editor prior to submission. References should be numbered and cited in the text by number in parentheses, with citations listed in the reference section in the order they appear in the text. References should include full titles and inclusive pagination. Figures should be numbered and referred to by number in the text. Tables should be numbered using Roman numerals and referred to by number in the text. Each Figure or Table should begin on a new page. Any footnotes should be numbered using an appropriate superscript numeral without parentheses to distinguish them from references and the text of these should appear on a separate page at the end of the manuscript.
- Once you have prepared your manuscript and you are ready to submit it, please go to: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/riskanalysis and log in or click on “Check for Existing Account.” If you do not have an account, click on “Create an Account” to set up a username and password. Once you have logged into your account, click on “Author Center.” Click on button to submit a new manuscript and proceed through each of the required pages. After submitting a manuscript, you should receive an e-mail confirmation that the paper was received. When the reviews are complete, the Associate Editor handling your manuscript will send an e-mail to you with further instructions on how to proceed. If you have any questions about this system, or if you are unable to submit a manuscript via the Internet, please contact the Managing Editor.
- Submission of a manuscript is a representation that it has not been published previously and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. It is also an assurance that all persons listed as authors have made significant (not merely administrative, technical, or supervisory) contributions to the content of the paper and that they each concur with the paper as initially submitted and with all revisions.
- As a result of the 1978 Copyright Law, a statement transferring copyright from the authors(s), or their employers (if they hold the copyright), to the Society for Risk Analysis will be required before the manuscript can be accepted for publication. The form can be downloaded from the Manuscript Central web site.
- Risk Analysis has a Conflict of Interest disclosure policy. Authors must acknowledge competing financial interests in the final version of their papers and sign and complete the Financial Interests Disclosure form.
- The journal makes no page charges. Authors can order reprints using order forms with the current price schedule that will be sent with page proofs.
