The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) of the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA) has an opening for a Staff Toxicologist at the Cypress office. Under the general direction of a Senior Toxicologist in the Human and Ecological Risk Office (HERO) of the Brownfields and Environmental Restoration Program (Cleanup Program), the Staff Toxicologist will provide expert scientific support in the areas of toxicology, human and/or
ecological risk assessment and exposure assessment, along with a variety of more difficult tasks directly
related to toxicology and risk assessment.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
Risk assessment reviews: Prepares and reviews complex Health Risk Assessments (HRA), their work plans and selection of remedial alternatives to ensure the DTSC mission to protect human health and the environment is adequately evaluated and addressed. Interprets and applies public health and/or environmental standards to assess public health risks from exposure to multiple media (e.g. soil, water, air) contaminated with chemicals from varied types of sites and/or releases to ensure that all potential exposure pathways are considered and/or evaluated. Independently write technical memoranda clearly identifying specific site characterization or risk assessment issues, discovered during review, that requires further investigation or evaluation before the characterization and/or risk assessments are considered complete.
Hazard Assessments: Independently reviews and evaluates existing toxicological information such as acute and chronic toxicity, indicators of carcinogenicity, port-of-entry effects and the array of observed and potential toxic endpoints in support of DTSC regulation of hazardous wastes sites and facilities and DTSC novel programs such as the Green Chemistry Initiative (GCI) Toxicity Information Clearinghouse and the GCI Safer Consumer Products. Provides technical review of toxicity criteria and hierarchical classifications proposed for inclusion in California regulations in support of such programs to DTSC teams and Cal/EPA teams.
