The Discipline(s) of Risk Science

Drastic changes propelled by technological disruptions, global warming and growing environmental, political, safety and security concerns lead to mounting expectations on risk analysis. There is therefore an urgent need to understand socio-technical systems, their impacts and risks; but the overall picture is hard to build.

How can the field of risk analysis fulfil the expectations that are placed on it? What actions are needed to help risk scientists and risk practitioners tackle the challenges they face?

Recognizing that the scientific study of risks draws upon and contributes to many disciplines, this Conference promotes interactions between all facets of risk science, including its general and applied parts.

The general part is concerned with the theories and concepts that provide the conceptual and theoretical foundation for applied studies. The applied part focuses on specific studies by applying existing concepts and methods and by creating new ones.

The close, continuous and mutually enriching interaction between these overlapping and intertwined parts is crucial for disseminating new theories and methods to applied work, and also for informing the general part by distilling fresh evidence from empirical studies.

This interaction can be promoted through multidisciplinarity approaches - by leaving one’s usual comfort zone and by collaborating with people whose expertise differs from one’s own.

Towards this end, the Conference brings together scientists, experts and practitioners from the entire spectrum of disciplines spanned by risk science, helping participants innovate as they explore the past, present and future of this exciting field of scientific inquiry.
